Fungal Meningitis Caused by Epidural Steroids

The Wall Street Journal is reporting that a recent epidemic of serious injuries and deaths related to the fungal infection meningitis were caused by a tainted batch of epidural steroids which was shipped from a plant in Framingham, Massachussetts to 75 clinics in 23 states. Meningitis is a potentially deadly fungal infection characterized by inflammation of the brain or central nervous system. Meningitis can be caused by either bacteria or a virus, and intially presents in the form of fever, headache, nausea, and neck stiffness. People suffering from meningitis may also experience dizziness, confusion, and strokes.

The pharmacy that produced the tainted epidural steroids has issued a recall, but many patients have already been injected with the product. There are 105 reported meningitis cases, including 8 deaths, associated with the outbreak so far, but that number is expected to grow as nearly 13,000 patients were exposed to the steroids. What is particularly alarming about the outbreak is that most of the affected individuals had healthy functioning immune systems.
