LEGAL PROBLEMS IN FOREIGN COUNTRIES: AMERICANS INJURED ABROAD

In the 21st Century, serious injuries and legal problems can arise anywhere in the world. Unfortunately, Americans and employees of American corporations who work, travel or vacation in foreign countries may encounter the devastating effects of injuries sustained in accidents abroad or may be faced with the non-payment of wages, benefits or compensation for employment or services they performed in other countries.

The legal difficulties involved with obtaining compensation for these injuries requires a lawyer with knowledge not only of the American judicial system but often courts in foreign countries, particularly in order to secure testimony from important witnesses abroad. We offer the experience and “hands-on” approach from senior attorneys with substantial trial and litigation experience and the skills necessary to research, understand and overcome these difficulties. We have developed the experience necessary to navigate the jurisdictional issues involved in prosecuting claims with international aspects to obtain and collect compensation for our clients.

OUR SUCCESSES:

Our representation of Americans injured abroad or workers entitled to compensation for employment abroad spans a wide variety of factual situations including:

  • We have represented an American corporate executive working for a British concern who found it necessary to sue in order to receive stock options promised to him by his British employer.
  • While visiting the United States, the wife of a German couple experienced a cerebral aneurysm which was mis-diagnosed by a local hospital. She returned to Germany where the aneurysm burst, causing severe brain damage. A claim was brought on behalf of the German couple in an American court. Many of the witnesses had to be interviewed and testified in Germany (under German rules of court), including German medical experts. Ultimately, a very successful result was obtained for the German visitors and they are now enjoying lifelong financial security.
  • The law firm recently obtained financial compensation for two Americans injured, while on vacation, at resort hotels in the Caribbean. One woman sustained permanent injuries to her hip and ankle because the resort hotel swimming pool ladder was defective and dangerous. The other woman was assaulted and seriously injured on the resort hotel beach where there was inadequate supervision. These successes are the result of combining our expertise in questions of foreign jurisdiction with our experience in handling personal injury cases.
  • Several American law firms hired a foreign engineer to work on a case against a Fortune 500 company in South American court. When the case did not conclude quickly, the American lawyers stopped paying the South American engineer. Our firm currently represents this gentleman for whom we are seeking full compensation for the services he performed for the American lawyers.

OUR LANGUAGES:

Jack Meyerson is fluent in Italian. Obviously, the ability to speak and write directly with clients in their own language makes it much easier to explain the often confusing and complex nature of the American judicial system. We are actively seeking to represent Italian nationals and Italian companies, particularly those who need to utilize the American court system.
