COMPLETE®MOISTURE PLUS™

Complete® MoisturePlus™ multipurpose contact lens solution has been recalled after being linked to painful and potentially blinding eye infections.

The manufacturer, Advanced Medical Optics (AMO) first voluntarily recalled the product in May, 2007 at the request of the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) after the Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) linked it to an outbreak of serious corneal infections called Acanthamoeba keratitis (AK), a very painful and potentially blinding eye infection which may require corneal transplants.

Acanthamoeba keratitis infections are generally very rare and occur when contact lenses and lens cases come into contact with a microorganism commonly found in water and soil. Early symptoms may resemble those of other eye infections, but it may eventually cause severe pain and vision loss. It is believed that the Complete® MoisturePlus™ solution was not contaminated, but was simply ineffective against common water-borne contaminants. Users may have contracted the infection by coming into contact with contaminated water through showers, swimming pools, or hot tubs. The preliminary results in a CDC multistate investigation indicate that the use of Complete® MoisturePlus™ solution increases the risk of contracting an AK infection.

If you or a loved one has suffered a severe eye infection or blindness potentially linked to Complete® MoisturePlus™ contact lens solution, please feel free to contact our office for a free consultation.
